Pine Ridge radio station going green in a big way

KILI radio is going green in a big way. The Pine Ridge radio station got a new solar panel installation this week and is now almost entirely powered by renewable sources.

The project has been two-and-a-half years in the making as Henry Red Cloud from Lakota Solar Enterprises has been seeking grants and donations. He eventually got all of the materials -- the panels, the inverter and all the components -- donated by the manufactures.

He says that there will now be some months each year that the station will draw zero power from the grid. He adds that KILI is now the only Native-owned radio station in the country run on so much green power.

"We're being able to help them to lessen their carbon moccasin print so to speak," said Red Cloud. "As well as looking to building the awareness, putting the awareness out there so people can start to think about renewables."

The panels that went up this week are the third green installation for the station. There is another set of solar panels already in place and the station also has a wind turbine.
